A slice of the 40 years old wedding cake of Charles and Diana sells for $2500 at auction. Prince Charles and Princess Diana were married at St Paul’s Cathedral in London on July 29, 1981. The “large slice” of icing and marzipan that came from one of the 23 official wedding cakes made for the royal wedding in 1981, sold on 11th August 2021 (Wednesday) for £1,850 ($2,562) along with a 20% buyer’s premium at Dominic Winter Auctioneers in Cirencester, England.
Before the sale got finalized, it was anticipated to sell for around £300 to £500. The icing that weighs around 800 grams i.e. 1.8 pounds features a sugared Royal Coat of Arms and a small silver horseshoe. It was given to Moyra Smith, an employee of the Queen Mother at Clarence House, whose family sold it to a collector in 2008.
The cake slice was bought by Gerry Layton, a private collector from the English city of Leeds. The amazement is that a large number of people wanted to bid on this large and unique piece of royal cake icing. And most of the inquiries had come from bidders in the UK, the US and the Middle East. The icing layer was preserved in cling film inside an old cake tin, along with a handmade paper label signed by the original owner which was taped to the lid. The auction house said on the sale page of the lot that — It looks exactly in the same condition as when originally sold, but they have also advised people against eating it. Its sale included a printed Order of Service program for the wedding ceremony, along with a memorial Royal Wedding Breakfast menu and table seating program for Buckingham Palace.
